  Chinchilla Care Sheet
A: Housing
Chinchillas should have a two or three tiered cage to accommodate their needs (they love to move around and jump). The cage should be made of galvanized bars or wire mesh and should ideally have a metal bottom pan. If the cage has a plastic bottom make sure the sides aren’t so high that the chinchilla is able to chew on it.

Accessories
Dust house/chinchilla dust: It is best to put this in the cage a few times a week for the chinchilla to bathe itself. If the house is left in all the time your chinchilla can get dry skin from bathing too much or sleeping in it
Water bottle; heavy food dish; pine bedding; wooden sleeping house (optional); sitting shelves (optional)
Chew toys: your local pet store should have a variety of appropriate chew toys. Chinchillas have a big need to chew so a few toys should be provided

Diet
Chinchilla pellets
Timothy hay: this hay should be stored in a box with air holes to keep it from getting moldy right away. Moldy hay can cause dangerous diarrhea so be sure to check it before feeding
Treats: a small piece of apple or carrot, a single raisin or peanut, a day
Calcium sticks: also an important part of the chinchilla diet
Handling
Never grab the chinchilla by the end of the tail, you could possibly pull it off. Use both hands to pick it up around the body. When holding it put your thumb at the base of the tail to keep the chinchilla from jumping away unexpectedly
