  Responsible Pet Ownership
Wild Side Pets encourages all prospective animal owners to thoroughly research any animal before you buy. We are in the business of selling animals, however we do not believe in the indiscriminate purchase of an animal without fully understanding what that purchase entails. We believe that mass merchandisers (like Wal-Mart) have made our society immune to the reality of living with the decisions we make--if we buy the jeans and take them home and don’t like them, we can take them back in a week or so.

Animals should never be treated like any another purchase.

Puppies are adorable, what with those big eyes, that little bit of clumsiness, all tiny and cute.

But the reality of a puppy is so far from all of that. They are needy animals. They have no manners. They do not speak English (or Spanish or Chinese or Russian) at all. They are terrible house guests. They eat. They poop. They chew up everything they can. They don’t sleep through the night. Stress can cause them to have diarrhea or vomit. Then as they get a little older, they want to procreate. So they urinate to mark their territory and mount your grandma’s leg. They require vet visits and shots and toys and food and leashes and collars and crates and walks and training and attention and love and love and love. Puppies are a huge commitment for a minimum of 7 to 8 years up to 15, maybe even 20 years. You need to plan for them for spring break, vacations, holidays and any time you want to get away just for the weekend or even overnight. Even your kids eventually will become more self-sufficient than your dog will.

So you need to think of these things long before you consider buying a puppy. Or any animal for that matter.

At Wild Side Pets, Inc., we expect our customers to make an educated decision about any animal they buy before they buy! We trust you to have the facts before you sit down in the puppy or kitten room and fall hopelessly for a cute little animal.

Your most basic commitment to an animal is financial. Can I afford the animal? The food? The veterinary care? Housing? Training? Toys? Treats? Leashes? Collars? Bedding? Spay/neuter? Shots? Pet sitter? Transportation? Geriatric care?

Your second commitment is time. Will I have enough time today to look after the animal’s needs? Tomorrow? Next week? When I move? When I get a new job? Get married? Have children? Can I find time to walk, play, train, love every day for as long as we are together?

Your most important commitment is sometimes overlooked…love and affection. Even the most undeserving pet owners are loved unconditionally by their animals. Do you have the love and affection to give this animal? Can you unconditionally love them when they have chewed up your shoes? Jeans? Wallet with your ID and money? When they have diarrhea? Vomit on your pillow as you sleep? When you are just too tired to get up at 5 AM because they have to pee really bad and cannot hold it another minute longer? Do you have the patience to try one (or two or 25) more times to get this animal to understand the simplest word in the English language…NO!? Do you have the time to sit quietly with them and share in the love they have for you?

If you have the answers to these questions and you are aware of what you can expect (and what is expected from you), come in and look around. We may just have the right animal for you. If you don’t have all the answers, please talk to one of our willing staff who can assist you and help you answer the questions you have. Think it through. Talk to other animal owners. Explore this web site. Learn.

Responsible pet owners are who we are. Responsible pet owners are who we want you to be! Think before you buy! It will be so much easier, not just for you, but for the animal you are responsible to.
